TOWARDS 2030: MULTITEL PAGLIERO IS AHEAD OF THE GAME WITH ITS ECO-SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY

Multitel Pagliero concurs with the Sustainable Development Goals indicated in the United Nations 2030 Agenda and is committed to ensuring economic growth on a human scale while respecting the environment, ecological balances and social cohesion. Multitel Pagliero, a company with a strong local presence but a focus on global markets, makes significant efforts to lessen the environmental impact of its operations and create a circular economy that can increase resource efficiency and benefit the community on a social level.

In the past two years, the sustainability strategy has come to pass through the continuation of some previously launched initiatives and projects and with the integration of new projects, aimed at specific ESG objectives, including:

  • confirmation in 2023 of the ISO 9001 certification. A standard that takes into account all aspects of the production process – resources, skills, awareness, communications and documented information
  • ISO 14001 (Environment) and ISO 45001 (Safety) certifications
  • extending of photovoltaic systems for the production of electricity
  • creation of an ESG Assessment to calculate environmental, social and governance performance
  • preparation of the Sustainability Plan
  • preparation of the Sustainability Report

The strategy is as all-encompassing as possible, and therefore touches on multiple aspects.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

In order to encourage waste recovery through recycling or reuse, we are committed to managing and lowering the amounts of waste produced during industrial activities. Because of this, we have created an environmental management system that will enable us to reduce the possibility of pollution with regard to all environmental matrices (soil, water, and air). A specific unit has been established to continuously track the amount of waste generated, and the company-wide adoption of best practices has made it possible to recover 78% of the solid waste.

WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

The carrying out of production activities and their growth requires responsible and efficient management of water resources, in terms of both extraction and outflow. Multitel Pagliero has therefore introduced procedures whose objective is to mitigate any water risk. Continuous monitoring of the quality of waste water promotes its recovery and reuse.

RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION OF MATERIALS

Efficient use of natural resources, a commitment to minimising waste from manufacturing operations, and the promotion of sensitivity in the supply chain are all factors in the shift towards a circular economy.

ENERGY SECURITY AND SUPPLY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES

Thanks to the self-production of electricity from renewable sources and the constant monitoring of direct consumption, Multitel Pagliero has made great strides towards energy autonomy. Significant resources have been invested in updating machinery and building photovoltaic systems. With a current production capacity of approximately 365,000 kWh per year, the systems installed at M1, M5 and S1 can provide approximately 13% of our annual needs. The systems at M3, M4 and M6, spread over 2,600 square metres and with a production capacity of approximately 430,000 kWh/year, in addition to doubling the covered surface area, meet 30% – of total consumption recorded in 2022 – of the annual electricity requirement. Lastly, in the M7 site there is a plant in use with a covered surface area of approximately 2,500 square metres and a production capacity of approximately 395,000 kWh/year.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND GREEN BUSINESS

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions deriving from operational activities and marketed products is encouraged as a way of mitigating climate change. In accordance with the standards of the GHG Protocol, a preliminary process of analysis and estimation of certain categories of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) was started in 2022 to gauge the extent of environmental impact, determine potential margins for improvement and assess further reduction and/or compensation measures. It is projected that the avoided greenhouse gas emissions will total approximately 130 tons CO2 by 2022.

PRODUCTION OF LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT MACHINES

In order to produce zero-impact vehicles we have created a unique range of platforms using hybrid power technology (HYBRID Series) and fully electric power (AXON Series). Thes platforms ensure low consumption, reduced emissions and minimal noise and can be used in historic town centres, restricted traffic zones, shopping centres and green areas. The tracked platforms range includes models powered by dual supply i.e. combustion engine and electric motor. The Hybrid series consists of the telescopic truck-mounted platforms MT230, MT162, MT204, 160ALU and MT162 EX and the new full electric AXON range of the telescopic MT162, MJE250 and the tracked platforms SMX250 and SMX210. Included in the low environmental impact models is the articulated platform MXE170 powered by LPG and petrol. A machine designed for use in the narrow streets of urban or historic centres which, by running on LPG, guarantees lower costs, less pollution and makes it possible to enter town centres at any time even where traffic restrictions are in force.

Alberto Baldi – Head of approval and safety/environment department

Now a well-consolidated firm, Multitel Pagliero has the size and scope of a multinational organisation: over 500 employees with 10 local units in Italy and offices in France, Germany and the UK.

During my 20 years with the company I have seen its organisational level grow, accompanied by a parallel trajectory towards environmental sustainability, maturing in its awareness that such development should be on a human scale, mindful of ecological balances and social cohesion. That is, in a manner consistent with the provisions of the Sustainable Development Goals indicated in the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the company philosophy, based on the qualities and values of the Pagliero family.

A focus on “sustainability” leads to a reduction in the environmental impact of manufacturing, creates a circular economy that can increase resource efficiency and promotes an economy that benefits locals and citizens in general. These are daily company commitments, which generate trust and a favourable context for the company.

During the year, the company released its “Code of Ethics and Conduct” which establishes the most important issues and initiatives in the environmental, social and economic fields.

In March, the Quality certification was integrated with the achievement of two other very important certifications in accordance with the ISO 45001:2015 requirements for workplace safety and the ISO14001:20158 standard on environmental management.

From an environmental point of view, internal waste management has been improved, as well as scrupulous control of emissions from our production activities; photovoltaic systems for self-production of electricity have been implemented with installations on the M3, M4 and M6 sites; to monitor consumption, detectors will be installed on the machinery of the most energy-intensive buildings, and new systems for saving water will be implemented. Similar interventions are aimed at improving the working environment of employees, first of all the construction of the company canteen by the end of 2024.
